UCSF Physics Research Laboratory
Bruce Hasegawa, PhD, Director, 415/353-9472

This laboratory pursues the development and application of imaging techniques for the assessment of cancer and heart disease using dual-modality imaging. The laboratory also trains graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in medical imaging. Laboratory resources include an experimental emission-transmission CT system, two high-resolution dual-modality imaging systems for biological research, electronics and detector laboratory, and radiopharmaceutical handling/storage facilities. Current work is focused on development of instrumentation and algorithms for biological research; development of a high-resolution gamma-ray focusing lens; and development of dual-modality imaging for diagnosis of cancer and heart disease.

(See article "Dual-Modality Imaging with SPECT/CT")

Research Directions:

  • Development of combined x-ray/radionuclide imaging systems for diagnosis of cancer and cardiovascular disease
  • Development of high-resolution radionuclide and x-ray systems for biological research
