A related goal is to advance new technologies and methods for animal imaging. The Cancer Imaging Program (CIP) of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) solicits applications from multi-institutional research partnerships formed by academic, industrial, and other investigators, for the purpose of developing imaging technology that is applicable to cancer research involving human subjects and/or animal models. The academic-industrial partnerships must be dedicated to the complete research and development cycle, culminating in the product prototype stage. The partnership model is expected to more readily overcome various barriers to the development of new imaging devices and technologies faced by either academia or industry working alone. The intent of the Pathway to Independence Program is to assist new investigators in transitioning to stable independent research positions at an earlier age and with an enhanced probability of success in obtaining independent NIH or other independent research support. The PI award will provide up to 5 years of support consisting of two phases. The initial mentored phase will provide support for up to 2 years for the most promising and exceptionally talented new investigators who have no more than 5 years of postdoctoral research training experience at the time of initial application or subsequent resubmission(s). This initial phase of mentored support will allow the candidate time to obtain additional training, complete research, publish results, and bridge to an independent research position. The candidate must propose a research project that will be pursued during the K99 phase and transition into an independent project during the R00 phase of the award. The candidate and mentor(s) together will be responsible for all aspects of the mentored (K99 phase) career development and research program. These software packages sometimes become useful to a much broader community of users that can include translational and clinical researchers. The goal of this program announcement is to support the continued development, maintenance, testing and evaluation of existing software. The proposed work should apply best practices and proven methods for software design, construction, and implementation to extend the applicability of existing biomedical informatics/computational biology software to a broader biomedical research community. The BRGs support multi-disciplinary research performed in a single laboratory or by a small number of investigators that applies an integrative, systems approach to develop knowledge and/or methods to prevent, detect, diagnose, or treat disease or to understand health and behavior. A BRG application may propose hypothesis-driven, discovery-driven, developmental, or design-directed research. This new program extends the concept of the NIH Director's Pioneer Awards (<http://nihroadmap.nih.gov/pioneer/>http://nihroadmap.nih.gov/pioneer/) to support new investigators of exceptional creativity who propose innovative approaches that have the potential to produce an unusually high impact on significant problems in biomedical and behavioral research. The NIH Director's New Innovator Awards will provide grant support to highly innovative new investigators who have not yet obtained a traditional R01 grant. Applicants must hold an independent research position at a domestic institution, and be within 10 years of their terminal degree (l997 or later). The two cycles of the pilot have involved over 1100 R01 applications reviewed in 40 study sections in the Center for Scientific Review. Approximately 15% of the eligible new investigators have used the option of next cycle submission. The Center for Scientific Review is committed to continuing this pilot for the current study sections and to the extension to all new investigator R01 applications by the end of 2007.
