Radiology Consultation Service The UCSF Department of Radiology has a longstanding commitment to organ system specialization, with focused research efforts and development of clinical diagnostic skills in specific areas of expertise. These skills are available to the practicing general radiologist through our Radiology Consultation Service, an ongoing program used by radiologists nationwide and around the world. The program has been one of our most successful enterprises in providing improved patient care and in enhancing the long-term relationship we enjoy with participants in UCSF postgraduate radiology programs. A full-time coordinator is available to handle incoming cases. The service includes primary interpretations and second opinions of unusual or difficult cases, over-reads for difficult modalities such as cardiac MR, quality control of image interpretation, coverage for both vacation and case volume overload, recommendations for improving exam quality and reducing procedure time, and providing abstracts of current literature. Consultations are performed by a radiologist with subspecialty expertise in: MR of brain, spine, and ENT; pediatric neuro MR; cardiac MR; musculoskeletal and body MR; MR arthography; CT and coronary artery calcification assessment; SPECT cardiac studies; and breast imaging. Images may be transmitted by individuals or groups either electronically using teleradiology or couriered overnight to UCSF. Results are transcribed, reviewed, and electronically transmitted to the referring radiologist within 24 hours of receipt of the images.
