INFORMATION FOR HYSTEROSALPINGOGRAPHY
Hysterosalpingography
Hysterosalpingography is an x-ray examination of a woman's uterus and fallopian tubes that uses a special form of x-ray called fluoroscopy and a contrast material.
Patient Safety Tips Prior to a Hysterosalpingogram
- Please let us know if you have any allergies or adverse reactions to medications.
- Patients should have a pregnancy test performed prior to this exam.
- Please leave your valuables at home or in your room in the hospital.
- Please let us now if you need interpreting services, this can be arranged for you.
- Please bring a list of your current medications with you (out-patient). Stop taking Aspirin or aspirin-containing products at least 2 days prior to the procedure. If you are taking other blood thinning medications, contact your doctor to discuss.
Preparation for the procedure
- The exam should take place on days 7-10 after the first day of her last menstrual.
- Please arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled exam time.
- You will be given a contrast screening form to complete.
- The technologist will verify your identification and exam requested.
- There will be an opportunity for you to talk to the radiologist about the plan for the procedure and give your consent.
During the procedure
- The duration of the procedure will vary, but the average is about 45 minutes.
- The technologist will position you on the exam table.
- The technologist and radiologist will be available to answer any questions.
After the procedure
- The patient may experience vaginal spotting (bleeding) and pelvic cramps for 1 day after the procedure.
- Tylenol may be taken as indicated after the procedure for pain relief.
- If you experience increased pain, fever, or heavy bleeding after the exam, contact your doctor immediately.
