Dr. David J. Soffa, M.D. MPA, FACR
Medical Student Instructor in Diagnostic Imaging: When & What to Order
Dr. David Soffa is the Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs for American Imaging
Management, Inc. (AIM). He is a board-certified radiologist and an Assistant Clinical Professor
of Radiology at the University of California San Francisco. In his role, Dr. Soffa is responsible
for Client relations and overall Medical policy.
Dr. Soffa joined AIM in 1999 as Chief Medical Officer, overseeing clinical projects and physician reviewers.
Dr. Soffa’s background includes over 20 years of active clinical practice in radiology, and over
12 years serving in full-time administrative medicine, managed care policy and clinically related
business.
After receiving his BS from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, Dr. Soffa earned his
MD from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and was also awarded his Masters of Public
Administration in Health Services Administration from the University of San Francisco. Dr.
Soffa is a Fellow of the American College of Radiology, and a past president of the San
Francisco Medical Society.
Dr. Sean Cullen, M.D. Assistant Clinical Professor of Radiology
Medical Student Instructor in Neuroradiology
Dr. Cullen is a specialist in the imaging and treatment of vascular disease of the brain and spine. After undergraduate studies at Harvard College and graduate work in philosophy and history of science at the Technical University in Berlin, Germany, he received his M.D. degree from Columbia University’s College of Physicians & Surgeons, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honor society. Residency and diagnostic neuroradiology training were completed at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital. He then completed a two-year fellowship in neurointerventional radiology at UCSF medical center. Dr. Cullen was also a visiting fellow at Bicetre Hospital in Paris, France and received a master’s degree from the University of Paris. He was a staff neurointerventional radiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Boston, MA. Currently, he is a staff neurointerventional radiologist at Kaiser Permanente’s Northern California regional neuroscience center in Redwood City, CA.
Interests include imaging and treatment of ischemic stroke, cerebral aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations of the brain and spine, vascular anomalies, and pediatric neurovascular disease.
Dr. Cullen is a Senior Member of the Society of Neurointerventional Surgery, and has been a reviewer for numerous publications including Neurosurgery, Stroke, and Interventional Neuroradiology.

Dr. Douglas Sheft, M.D., Clinical Professor of Radiology
Medical Student Instructor in Abdominal Imaging
After
graduating from Harvard Medical School Dr. Sheft completed his residency in
Diagnostic Radiology at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He came
to San Francisco courtesy of the United States Army Medical Corps when he was
assigned to Letterman General Hospital as Chief of Diagnostic Radiology. The
following year he went much further west to Cu Chi, South Viet Nam as the Chief
of Radiology at the 12th Evacuation Hospital. He returned to civilian life and
academics as a full time faculty member at UCSF in the Abdominal Imaging Section.
Along the way he was on the resident selection committee and the host for weekly
Grand Rounds.
After several years in academic medicine Dr. Sheft decided that he was much
more interested in clinical medicine rather than research and left for an opportunity
to start a new private practice group in San Francisco at
St. Francis Memorial Hospital.
Over the years his radiology group has grown and they now also cover St. Mary’s
Medical Center, the San Francisco Magnetic Resonance Center as well as 2 other
Open MR Imaging offices.
He has continued to teach medical students, radiology residents, and post residency
fellows at UCSF and enjoys meeting each new class.
Dr. Stanley B. Reich, M.D.
Medical Student Instructor in Cardiopulmonary Imaging
Dr. Stanley Reich's career in medicine has spanned more than 50 years.
A graduate of Cornell University and NYU School of Medicine, Dr. Rich completed his Radiology Residency at NYU in 1949 and became an Assistant Professor at NYU. He is board certified in Radiology and Nuclear medicine.
He came to San Francisco in 1952, and for 20 years was Clinical Professor of Radiology at UCSF, and Chair of Radiology at Mt. Zion Hospital.
In 1972, he moved to Denver to become Professor of Radiology at University of Colorado.
Returning to California in 1977, he joined the staff of UC Davis as Professor of Radiology and Chief of Radiology for the Northern California Veterans Administration clinics, locating at Martinez VA Hospital. During this time, he consulted at UCSF as Clinical Professor of Radiology rom 1977 - 1998. He also has continued to be a consultant in radiology at Travis Air Force Base.
Dr. Reich is a Fellow of the American College of Radiology, American Society of Thoracic Radiology and the American Radium Society.
Dr. Rich has been a dedicated teacher of medical students at UCSF, and a regular attending in the Radiology Learning Center - working first with Dr. Steven ross and then with Dr. henry Goldberg. His sessions on Thoracic Radiology are greatly valued by the students.
