Faculty Update - 2005

Reddy to Lead Residency Program

Gautham P. Reddy, MD, MPH, assistant professor of radiology in residence, became program director of the Residency Program on July 1, 2005. He had served as associate director since 2002. Reddy replaces Michael B. Gotway, MD, who led the program successfully through its ACGME review during his four-year stewardship of the program. Gotway left UCSF to accept a position with Scottsdale Medical Imaging in Scottsdale, AZ.

After receiving his medical degree and masters of public health at George Washington University in Washington, DC, Reddy completed his radiology residency at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA. He then completed a fellowship year in thoracic/cardiac imaging, followed by a research fellowship in cardiovascular imaging, both at UCSF. Reddy became a faculty member of the Chest Section at UCSF in 1999.

In addition to his new duties as Residency Program director, Reddy has accepted the newly created position of chief of cardiac imaging, which encompasses CT and MRI at all UCSF sites. He will also continue in his role as chief of cardiac and thoracic imaging at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

“We are grateful to Dr. Gotway for his service and leadership,” said Department Chair Ronald Arenson, MD. “We look forward to continued progress of the Radiology Residency program under Dr. Reddy’s direction and congratulate him on his new positions.”

Hastings Assumes Interventional Post as SFGH

Geoffrey S. Hastings, MD, associate clinical professor of radiology, accepted the position of chief of interventional radiology at the San Francisco General Hospital effective July 1, 2005.

Hastings received his medical degree in 1987 from the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. Following a residency in diagnostic radiology at Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston, MA, he came to UCSF for a fellowship year in interventional radiology. Hastings served as director of interventional radiology at Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage from 1994-95 before accepting a position at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, where he remained for five years, ultimately directing its Angio-Interventional Radiology section and the Angio-Interventional Radiology Fellowship Program.

“Dr. Hastings has provided excellent interventional services to both SFGH and the Veterans Administration Medical Center,” said Ron Arenson, MD, chairman. “He will continue to provide support at the VAMC, but will now focus much of his attention at the county hospital.”

Suasn Wall Steps Down as Senior Associate Dean

Susan D. Wall, MD, is stepping down after almost seven years as senior associate dean of the UCSF School of Medicine. Her responsibilities have included oversight of graduate and undergraduate medical education programs at UCSF and UCSF-Fresno.

During her tenure, she was responsible for the successful completion of two ACGME accreditation cycles, increased standards for graduate medical education, and improving the accreditation rates for 70 residency and fellowship programs. Wall has also been a strong advocate for the UCSF housestaff.

Wall, who received her training at UCSF, will return following a three-month sabbatical to devote more time to her responsibilities as vice chair for academic affairs for the Department of Radiology. As special assistant to the dean, she also will complete several projects and assist the new associate dean with the transition.

Dean David Kessler, MD, commented, “We are grateful for Dr. Wall’s stewardship of these programs and for her service to the school.”
